Windows 10 stuck on making sure you’re ready to install. There are many reasons that you might get an error message while updating or installing Windows 10. However, common errors can be eliminated in a few simple steps that you can carry out yourself.
Note: When you upgrade, your device will be upgraded from an older version of Windows – e. B. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 – updated to Windows 10.
Before looking for a specific error code, follow the steps outlined in General Troubleshooting. If these don’t fix your upgrade or installation problem, check the table of error codes at the end of this article.

Here are some suggestions for troubleshooting upgrade and installation errors:

An error that starts with 0xC1900101 is usually a driver error. - Make sure your device has enough storage space: The device requires at least 16 GB of free space to upgrade a 32-bit operating system and at least 20 GB of free space to upgrade a 64-bit operating system. For more information, see Freeing up space in Windows 10 .
- Run Windows Update multiple times: Download and install any updates available from Windows Update, including software updates, hardware updates, and some third-party drivers. Use the Windows 10 troubleshooter to fix Windows Update errors.
- Check the third-party drivers and download any updates: You can find third-party drivers and installation instructions for hardware that you’ve added to your device on the manufacturer’s website.
- Remove any additional hardware: Remove all external storage devices and drives, docking stations, and other hardware components that you have connected to the device and that are not required for basic operation.
- Check Device Manager for errors: Click the start button, and in the search box on the taskbar, type device manager. Select Device Manager from the results. In the window that appears, find any devices that have a yellow exclamation mark next to them (you may need to select each category to navigate to the device list). Press and hold (or right-click) the device name and select Update Driver Software or Uninstall to correct the errors.
- Remove third-party security software: Make sure you know how to reinstall the programs and have any required product keys available. Windows Defender will protect your device in the meantime.
- Repair hard drive errors: Click the start button, and type command prompt in the search box on the taskbar . Select Command Prompt from the list of results. In the window that appears, type chkdsk / f C: and press ENTER. The hard drive repairs will begin automatically and you will be prompted to restart your device. Note: You need administrator rights on your device for this.
- After the repair, do a clean restart to Windows: Here’s how.
- Restoring and Repairing System: Files Click the start button, and type command prompt in the search box on the taskbar . Select Command Prompt from the list of results. In the window that appears, type ISM.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / Restore health and press ENTER.
